EEP Announces Appointment of Amy Wilkins to Board of Directors
NEW YORK, June 3, 2009 The Education Equality Project, a leader in the civil rights movement to eliminate the racial and ethnic achievement gap in public education, today announced that Amy Wilkins, Vice President for Government Affairs and Communications at The Education Trust, has joined the Education Equality Project's Board of Directors. A tireless and effective leader for equal education, Amy brings extensive experience in community organizing and advocacy to the education reform movement.
"Amy Wilkins brings a passion and commitment to education reform that is shaped by her successes in advocacy at the Children's Defense Fund, the Democratic National Committee, the Peace Corps, and her work at the White House Office of Media Affairs," said Ellen Winn, Director of the Education Equality Project. "We are excited to draw on her experiences and leadership in the civil right movement to create an effective school for every child."
At The Education Trust, Amy works for the high academic achievement of all students at all levels, prekindergarten through college. This work focuses on closing the achievement gaps that separate lowincome students and students of color from other youth.
"I am honored to join with the leaders of the Education Equality Project in this civil rights movement to bring effective public schools and educational equity to all the children of American regardless of race, ethnicity, income or zip code," said Amy Wilkins. "I believe that all children can and will learn at high levels if we teach them at high levels. To continue to ignore the low performing schools that African American, Latino and low income children are offered by our public education system is to continue the legacy of disgrace and injustice that Brown v. Board of Education sought to overturn."
Amy Wilkins will sit on the Education Equality Project's Board of Directors with Democrats for Education Reform Executive Director Joe Williams, who serves as President of the Board; past Colorado Governor and Strong American Schools Chairman Roy Romer; Marquette Institute Founder and Director Howard Fuller; Harvard Business School Professor Stacey Childress and civil rights leader and former President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza Raul Yzaguirre.
