Mr. William Coleman to speak at Education Equality Day - May 16th

The Education Equality Project has confirmed that Mr. William T. Coleman Jr., will be speaking at the Education Equality Day in Washington DC on May 16th. Mr. Coleman was the first African-American Secretary of Transportation and first African-American Supreme Court Clerk, and coauthor the brief for Brown v. Board of Education.

Gaps, Equality, and Student Achievement

For nearly a decade now, the buzzword in education reform has been student achievement. Thanks to NCLB and AYP, we were all about the test scores and whether learners were able to show year-on-year gains, demonstrating that their skills and abilities were improving academic year after academic year.
Often overlooked in our push for improved student achievement has been the student achievement gap. While we were tracking how students were doing longitudinally, we were missing the boat on the growing performance problems between the haves and the have nots. How were African-American students measuring up compared to white students? Hispanic students versus white students? Native-American students versus white students? Low-income students versus rich students?

McKinsey Report: Achievement Gaps Are Causing The Equivalent of A Deep Recession

Poor academic achievement on multiple levels -- including dismal showings among middle class students in America compared to other countries -- has led the United States to lose hundreds of billions of dollars in its gross domestic product, according to a report released by McKinsey & Company today.
The report makes a case for the devastating economic impact of not improving the nation's schools. Its data show that achievement gaps have imposed "the economic equivalent of a permanent deep recession." The report does not offer specific recommendations for getting out of this ditch, other than to look more closely at the few school systems that are making progress and adopt their practices.

Your education road map to state and federal politics

Several big names in ed reform, including Education Secretary Arne Duncan and New York City School Chancellor Joel I. Klein gathered today to discuss a new McKinsey & Company report about the achievement gap's impact on the economy.
Although much of what was said about low-income and minority students lagging behind in achievement was old hat, the report did back up the cost of the gaps with estimated dollar signs.

Achievement Gaps Create “Permanent National Recession”

The Economic Impact of the Achievement Gap in America's Schools, a new report from McKinsey & Company, predicts that the U.S. GDP would be $1.3-2.3 trillion higher if the achievement gap between the United States and its international peers were closed in 1998.
