Last week, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the latest winners of Race to the Top, the initiative he devised to leverage federal dollars to drive education reform at the state level. While no grant process is perfect, the competition drove a remarkable volume of new plans and even new laws designed to advance educational opportunity. Many states showed boldness—and I'm particularly excited that all 12 winning states mentioned Teach For America in their applications.

Politics K-12 reports on Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s praise and sympathy to those states that came up short in the competition. The New York Times notes the common eastern geography of all but one winner so far (Hawaii). The Wall Street Journal gives a breakdown of all the scores and payouts. EdWeek’s Teacher Beat writes that there is no clear teacher narrative (i.e., what core principles on teacher effectiveness helped some states win over others) in the RTTT winners’ applications. HechingerEd graphs the buzzwords of the winners’ and losers’ applications. Eduwonk notes that nine of the ten winning states are in the middle of competitive executive races (governors and mayor in DC), and the Center for Education Reform asks if the states were chosen for political reasons.
