Fifty-Five Years Later: American Education Separate And Unequal

In the case of Brown vs. the Board of Education on May 17th 1954, the Supreme Court decided that the Constitution of the United States must guarantee equal education for all American citizens.
In this landmark case, schools were desegregated across the South and the breath and width of the United States. Fifty-five years later, however, we find American education is still sporadically separate and unquestionably unequal.

Achievement Gaps Drag Down Economy, Study Finds

The achievement gap between U.S. students and those in other nations-and among different groups of students in the United States-is a significant, long-term drag on the economy, according to a national research group's study released today.
The McKinsey & Co. study estimates that nation's Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, would have been $1.3 trillion to $2.3 trillion higher in 2008-9 percent to 16 percent of overall GDP-if the United States had closed the gap on internationally benchmarked tests in recent years.

Incentives for Equitable Education

The US Education Department (USED) will soon be writing checks totaling more than $100 billion (yes that's a b) to states and districts. About 95% is just backfilling budget holes--a good thing given the precipitous and potentially disastrous drop in state and local revenues. Unfortunately, USED will be criticized because the money didn't come soon enough, wasn't enough, wasn't fairly distributed, and won't last forever.

School Chief: Mayors Need Control of Urban Schools
